hi rosemarie – sorry it took me so long to response too as i was travelling. i leave the treatment to my surgeons and doctors.you must have complete faith in their expertise. i wish you well. as far as acid reflux, i do have a wedge pillow but i am trying not to use this support. instead i continue to take prilosec daily and experiment with changing my habits. right now i am not eating anything past 9 pm and it seems to work as i have not had any acid reflex for a few weeks now. there is light at the end of the tunnel and you need to work towards it. is there a cancer support group in your community that you can join? take care and write if you need someone to listen. andy

Andy, thanks for responding and I apologize for taking so long to respond back. I wasn’t used to this site and thought I was doing something wrong when I didn’t get a response the next day. Yes, I have ”zip” patience. lol..Anyway, I started drinking all different types of shakes in between regular meals. Also, Boost and Ensure. Seems to be slowly working. I gained 2 lbs in 2 weeks. Not a lot but a plus for sure. I’m so happy to read how well you are doing. All that improvement in one year? Wow….congrats my friend. It has been almost a year for me now but still going for treatments and some complications have surfaced. My tumor was the same size as yours. Chemo took it down to 3 cm, small enough for the surgeon to remove. Problem was, the base of that tumor settle right on my lung area. He made the choice to leave a tiny piece there fully trusted that after surgery radiation would rid of it. Well, I wasn’t so lucky. That little piece leanned up against my lung, closing it over 70%. I am now on oxygen and they are working with radiation to open the lung and also kill that little piece of tumor in there. Oh, Plus, I have chemo once a week. They felt both would be best untill all was resolved. The radiation seems to be opening the lung now but it is taking very long. The surgeon feels I should have a ”stint” put in the lung to keep it open so I can breath better. Well, I think that’s what I am going to do. I am going to discuss this with him on Monday and perhaps go back to Sloan Memorial for this ”stint”….I trust this surgeon very much. He did my original surgery and is a top Esophageal/Lung Doctor at Sloan Memorial Hospital in New York City. Next month, he is moving to Mt. Sinai in NY to become the head of the Tharasic dept.
Sorry about your acid reflux. Do you keep yourself propped up enough at night? That seems to be the key for me. I am up almost 30-40 persent above pillow range! Took some getting used to but it certainly beats popping acid meds all night long. I don’t like taking meds to begin with. I don’t have a big family to ask for help. Only one sister that works long hours. I have many girlfriends but they work also. I have one older daughter but the same with her. I feel so alone all the time. I cry every single night. It really has become a part of my daily thing. And your right, not only chemo but, radiation makes you SOOOO depressed. I don’t know how the heck I drive myself home from there. My GP wanted to give me something for depression but I said no. Like I mentioned…I don’t like taking too much….especially now with all the heavy duty stuff floating around in my body. Thank you for responding and thank you ALL for your tips and concern. I’m so scared and just wish I could get out of this ”funk” I have been in. I read, listen to music, talk on the phone, TV….you name it I tried it. This sickness is really doing a number on me. I don’t even know who ”Me” is anymore. Thanks for listening everyone. (((hugs)))

i had stage 3 EC with a 8 cm tumor. yesterday 7/7/2010 mark the anniversary of my surgery. personally i am telling myself that i have beaten this beast. i am back to normal, eating, drinking, working and doing sports as i had pre cancer. only slight issue is occassional reflux when i sleep. i am taking prilosec daily. an experienced surgeon is key to a full recovery. i would highly recommend dr donald low from virginia mason medical center in seattle. rosemarie – i think you need to adopt a positive attitude and tell yourself you can beat this cancer. losing hair – that is expected and normal. pse do not feel embarassed about it. as far as losing weight, i was 150 lbs pre cancer, 127 at diagnosis, 119 post surgery and today ( 1 year after surgery ) i am at 125. i think all cancer patient will drop to a lower weight zone permanently. as long as you feel good, weight lost shouldn’t be too much of a concern – hey many people would die for our weight lost!! radiation, it could be tough. if you have a long drive, i would advise you to rope in your friends to drive you for your radiation. i had mine about 3 hours drive each way. lined up 9 guys who took turns to drive me daily for my treatment. friends want to feel they are helping you and they would appreciate it if you ask for their assistance. it was a great way to know more about my friends in these drive. keep your positive attitude and keep telling yourself you will win this fight. don’t let the side effects brings you down. there are many survivors and nothing says you cannot be one of them. i would be happy to answer specific questions relating to what i went through. all the best, andy

One of my best friends has just gone through the whole thing. A very tough cancer; surgery, rads, chemo. I just saw him at the airport coming back from a trip and he looks great. His biggest problem has been putting weitht back on but he is now out about 6 months from finishing chemo and his life is back to normal.

After my dad had a biopsy and CT scan, he was given the news that he has esophageal cancer by his Gastroenterologist yesterday. The doctor didn’t tell us the stage of the cancer or what type of esophageal cancer he has. She asked him to scheduled an appt with an oncologist which he did and his appt is on Tuesday. The gastroenterologist did say that the cancer is in one spot and has not spread. The mass is about 2-3cm. Would the gastroenterologist know the stage my dad’s cancer is in? My sister and I want to do as much research as possible before dad’s appt on Tuesday. Where should we start?

The key thing was esophogeal cancer is getting to a surgical oncologist with a good deal of experience in performing the surgery. While many surgeons will say that they perform this type of surgery, there are not that many that perform it all the time; experience really matters with this surgery. http://news.cancerconnect.com/the-importance-of-surgeon-experience-in-surgery-for-esophageal-cancer/

Hi Margaret…the only advise I am able to give you is to find a GOOD Oncologist. Make sure you find out everything about his medical background and how long he/she has been doing this type of surgery. Don;t be afraid to ask questions. Write them down. Next, find a good surgeon who specializes in this type of cancer/surgery and get as many opinions as you want. Don;t settle for your first opinion. I went for 5 opinions. Best of luck to you and your family.

hi margaret – i live in idaho. i started my process with seeing a local GP for my weight lost. he ordered an endoscopy ( locally ) which found the tumor ( 8 cm ) at the junction of my stomach and esophagus. next we had an appointment for a endoscopic ultra sound ( salt lake city ) to stage the cancer. next i went on a driving tour to interview for my surgeon / hospital ( salt lake city & seattle ). i must say that the best place where you will find the surgeon with the right experience are in the major cities and in the well known medical centers eg mayo or md anderson. i found my surgeon in seattle virginia mason – dr donald low. my first visit/interview with my surgeon resulted in a small operation the next day. he wanted to see my tumor before we started radiation/chemo and also did some preliminary test. after i defined my surgeon, i found my oncologist locally and also my radiologist. for radiation, i read it is important to find a center that has up to date machine ie IMRT radiation machine. these machines are able to target the radition to the tumor and cause less damage to surrounding organs/tissues. i had my surgery on 7/7/2009 in seattle. 8 hours surgery, 2 hours in recovery, overnight stay in ICU. the starting point is to get the cancer staged. best of luck, andy

Gaining weight after surgery for esophogeal cancer can be difficult. I have found that milkshaes with protein and/or ensure is quite helpful for gaining weight. My personal favorite adds a lot of peanut butter to the shake as well
